easter bunny massacre

Easter Bunny Bloodbath is a 2010 Canadian horror film written and directed by Richard Mogg (Bangin’ Vengeance!). It stars Shayan Bayat (Bangin’ Vengeance!), Meghan Kinsley, Travis Turner (Mighty Mighty Monsters in Halloween Havoc), Adrian Daniels, Laura Hope, Jessica Hill (Resurrection – short), Chris J. Clements, Halie Hunter, Jim Hunter.

To date, the film has only been available via two limited edition VHS releases.

Plot:

Twenty years ago, young Peter McKay watched his father decapitate his sister on Easter morning. Peter never celebrated the Easter holiday again… until now.

Reviews:

Black humour can fit superbly when utilised the right way in a scary movie, but how many times do we need to see dumb slapstick failing in the slasher genre before filmmakers begin to realise that it just doesn’t work? Here it feels especially out of place because the tone became quite grim on occasion and I was really impressed by the mixture of mystery and terror. Despite some of the dialogue being amusing and the film having some fun, I felt that Mogg could have got much more out of the concept if he just played it straight.” A  Slash Above…

vlcsnap-2013-02-11-11h51m31s0

” … while being marketed as a homage it was really just a way for the director and producer to put together the worst possible thing they could as lazily and cheaply as they could and then manipulate those who, like myself, feel a great nostalgia for the old so damn bad they were good straight to video classics like Truth or DareA Critical Madness and Microwave Massacre. But this is far removed from anything like that. If anything it’s a mockery and an insult to such things.” Drew Mead, Best Horror Movies

“Despite not being exactly who the producers had in mind, there was enough to love in Easter Bunny Bloodbath that I really had fun with it. I’m all for Easter themed horror that’s not Passion of the Christ, and giving a film an 80s sensibility, even if it was a late 80s sensibility, always seems like a good idea to me. For the most part Easter Bunny Bloodbath is like a recently unearthed 80s slasher, it just happens to be a slasher where the killer is someone in an Easter Bunny outfit.” Devon B., Digital Retribution

easter-bunny-bloodbath-2010-bunny-outfit

“Nevertheless, Richard Mogg set out to make a great bad movie and that’s what he delivered. It has got fake blood splatter and intentionally cheesy acting and it’s all the better for it. He knew he had limitations and he turned those potential weaknesses into strengths and the end result is the best killer Easter Bunny story you’ll ever see… on your home video system.” Doug Ferguson, Sour Grapes Winery

“Finally, those looking for gory on screen deaths will find them here.  The special effects for these kills are not that great but the kills are still fun as hell making this one fun S.O.V. throwback.  Overall, this is a S.O.V. horror comedy that has tons of blood and tons of laughs. I highly recommend it.” Blacktooth, Horror Society

hellraiser3

Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth is a 1992 American-Canadian horror film and third installment in the Hellraiser franchise, directed by Anthony Hickox from a screenplay by Peter Atkins and Tony Randel based on characters created by Clive Barker.

It stars Doug BradleyTerry Farrell (Legion, Psychic Murders)Paula Marshall (Warlock: The Armageddon), and Kevin Bernhardt. It was the first Hellraiser film to be made outside the UK.

Screen Shot 2014-04-25 at 13.53.23

Heavy metal band Armored Saint appear in a nightclub scene. The film featured a metal-rock soundtrack and Barker directed the Motörhead video for “Hellraiser”, featuring Lemmy and Pinhead playing a game of cards.

Plot teaser:

The revelation of his own former humanity in Hellraiser II has resulted in the Cenobite named Pinhead being split into two distinct entities: His former self, World War I British Army Captain Elliot Spencer, and a manifestation of Spencer’s id, which takes on the form of Pinhead. While Spencer ends up in limbo, Pinhead is trapped, along with the puzzle box, amongst the writhing figures and distorted faces etched into the surface of an intricately carved pillar — the Pillar of Souls.

Screen Shot 2014-04-25 at 14.02.18

The pillar is bought by the rich and spoiled J.P. Monroe, owner of a popular nightclub called The Boiler Room. During her investigation, an ambitious young television reporter, Joey Summerskill, slowly begins to learn about Pinhead and the mysterious puzzle box. Joey is introduced to the pain the box can bring when she views a teenage clubgoer being ripped apart by the box’s chains in a hospital emergency room. Joey tracks the box and a young woman named Terri to The Boiler Room nightclub. Terri had previously stolen the box from the nightclub.

hellraiser III

Video tape interviews are recovered from the Channard Institute of one of Pinhead’s former victims Kirsty Cotton. Joey and Terri learn through the videos about the demonic Cenobites and the power of the Lament Configuration puzzle box and that it is the only means of sending Pinhead back to Hell…

Reviews:

“Despite its spotty pacing, schizophrenic plot veerings, and frequently unimpressive special effects, there’s still just a few tasty drops of fun to be found in Hellraiser 3 – especially if you’ve already seen episodes four through eight. The commitment to the previous entries is tenuous, but it seems clear that director Anthony Hickox and screenwriter Peter Atkins were at least trying to offer some new mythology while keeping the fans happy … Arguably the weakest of the trilogy, but still packing just enough brains and red meat to keep the Pinfans sated.” Scott Weinberg, DVD Talk

” … there is no trace of the disturbing intersection between the physical and psychological that were the backbone of the first two films, and even though Bradley plays Pinhead in all the same ways, the villain feels much different, and more hollow: he’s just a killer with outré fashion sense. He isn’t actually dangerous, any more than any given movie psycho slasher is dangerous, because he just fills a story role. The old Pinhead represented a coherent and suitably disturbing philosophy, and was an infinitely better villain as a result.” Tim Brayton, Antagony & Ecstasy

hellraiser III doug bradley pinhead

Hellraiser III ice dagger victim

“For all the blasphemies and British accent, Pinhead is just a sub-Freddy goon, and the ambiguities and perversities Barker is so fond of have been neatly tidied-up. This is the sort of picture teenagers in malls in Akron, Ohio might understand — a good horror sequel, and that’s all.” Jack Yeovil, Empire Magazine

” … sundry characters are skinned instantly, sliced with CDs, have drills or cameras rammed through their heads, smoke cigarettes from open wounds, explode in bloody chunks or distort like toffee. In the tradition of sequel-as-spectacle, this is almost as effective and crowd-pleasing a recap of basic principles as A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 3: Dream Warriors (1987) or Evil Dead II (1987).” The Aurum Film Encyclopedia: Horror

‘Welcome to the family’

Torment is a 2013 Canadian thriller horror film directed by Jordan Barker. The film had its world premiere on October 11, 2013 at the Screamfest Horror Film Festival. It stars Katharine Isabelle (American Mary; 13 Eerie) as a woman who must try to save her step-son from an insane family. In the U.S., Phase 4 Films will be releasing Torment onto VOD on June 10th.

torment 2013 canadian horror movie

Plot teaser:

Sarah (Katharine Isabelle) and Cory (Robin Dunne) have decided to go on vacation, taking Cory’s young son Liam with them. They’re hoping that the vacation will help ease some of the issues that Cory has with Sarah, as he resents that his widowed father remarried. The destination seems idea, a luxurious house in the middle of an idyllic wilderness, but upon their arrival they discover that someone has been living in the house. The local sheriff assures them that the intruders have probably moved on, but this soon proves to be false as Liam goes missing that same night. Sarah and Cory now have to try to fight an insane family for not only Liam, but also their very lives…

Reviews:

” … what Torment lacks in scintillating plot originality it makes up for in solid performances (Robin Dunne and Katherine Isabelle provide strong work, plus Stephen McHattie pops up for a few scenes, and he’s always the man), a professional sheen, and — most importantly — a fast-moving and consistently well-edited narrative that moves forward so expeditiously you’ll barely mind dealing with some familiar stuff. If a home invasion/slasher story can be called “enjoyably old-fashioned,” then this flick certainly qualifies.” Scott Weinberg, FEARnet

1-Torment-1

“The atmosphere alone was chilling and through subtle flowing plot twists you have yourself a film that you will not forget anytime soon.” Ross Wilcock, Slasher Studios

The Strangers may also come to mind, but here’s where the film differs greatly from that one – the killers have a motive and explain why they are targeting this guy. It’s not a terrible concept, but unfortunately the villain speaks with a voice not unlike Bane’s fromThe Dark Knight Rises, and thus it’s almost impossible to keep up that level of tension when I keep having the instinct to burst out laughing. I’m sure the thinking was that it would be creepy and unsettling, but it’s just kind of goofy…” Horror Movie a Day

Horns is a 2013 Canadian horror film co-produced and directed by Alexandre Aja (High TensionThe Hills Have Eyes remake; Piranha 3D) from a screenplay by Keith Bunin, based on Joe Hill’s novel (Hill is Stephen King’s son). It stars Daniel Radcliffe (The Woman in Black), Max Minghella, Juno Temple, Joe Anderson, Kelli Garner, James Remar. Horns is a Red Granite Pictures and Mandalay Pictures production.

The film had its world premiere at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, and is set to have its North American theatrical release in late 2014. The UK release date is for October 31, 2014.

Horns-Daniel Radcliffe

Speaking to Indie Wire in Toronto, Daniel Radcliffe dexcribed the story as having “real horror and slasher horror elements but then has this incredible emotional love story in the middle of it.”

Plot teaser:

Ig Perrish (Radcliffe) is the number one suspect for the violent rape and murder of his girlfriend, Merrin (Temple). Hungover from a night of hard drinking, Ig awakens one morning to find horns starting to grow from his own head and soon realises their power drives people to confess their sins and give in to their most selfish and unspeakable impulses – an effective tool in his quest to discover the true circumstances of his late girlfriend’s tragedy and for exacting revenge on her killer…

Daniel Radcliffe Horns horror movie 2013

Reviews:

” … a Dogma-style mash-up of grim comedy and religious satire”. The Guardian

“Predominantly a failure of tone, “Horns” has plenty of admirable traits and yet dooms itself from the outset. It’s an admirable conceit stuffed into far less subtle material”. Eric Kohn, IndieWire

“While this all begins as a kind of supernatural black comedy … the tone grows darker with each revelation”. John DeFore, The Hollywood Reporter

” … benefits from the helmer’s twisted sensibility, but suffers from a case of overall silliness”. Peter Debruge, Variety

Fearing financial loss on what is their busiest event day of the year, the Bikini Snow Day, the Twin Pines management tries to hide news of the missing skiers and sightings of strange creatures. Disaster strikes as, one-by-one, the bikini-clad snow bunnies  become meals for the shark. The avalanche has cut off the roads trapping all within the Twin Pines Valley. The local sheriff allies with snowboarders to track down the monster…

Trailer review:

“There are lots of fins sliding weightlessly across the surface of the snow, and lots of women in bikinis getting eaten. The lead actor is best known for playing “Fratboy” in a Twilight film. The whole thing looks as if it was made on a budget of 15p. It’s exactly what you’d expect from a film about sharks in this post-Sharknado world.” Staurt Heritage, The Guardian

‘Sh!t just got surreal’

Septic Man is a 2013 Canadian horror film directed by Jesse Thomas Cook (Scarce; Monster Brawl) from a screenplay by Tony Burgess (Pontypool). It stars Jason David Brown, Molly Dunsworth (Hobo with a Shotgun), Tim Burd (Saw 2 and 3), Robert Maillet (Pacific Rim), Julian Richings (Survival of the Dead), Stephen McHattie.

septic_man_still_2__large

Plot teaser:

Jack (Jason David Brown) is an average sewage worker who has been asked to investigate a water contamination in his hometown that has forced everyone else, including his pregnant wife Shelley (Molly Dunsworth), to evacuate. He decides to investigate the local sewage plant but ends up getting trapped in a septic tank by Lord Auch (Tim Burd) and his brother Giant (Robert Maillet). They refuse to let Jack out despite his pleas and the toxic sewage eventually begins to transform Jack into the hideous mutant Septic Man…

Reviews:

“Some might be put off by its seemingly nonsensical narrative and distinct lack of a straightforward plot, but with solid performances from Maillet, Richings, and Burd, a pulsing yet ambient score by Nate Kreiswirth, exceptional special effects, and, of course, Burgess’s tendency to keep you thinking long after the credits roll, Cook’s Septic Man is destined to be a divisive yet damned intriguing film.” Brad McHargue, Dread Central

septic-man-2

“Burgess and Cook’s decision to not let their monster roam free leaves SEPTIC MAN spinning wheels. The movie rarely goes anywhere. If there’s an underlying social commentary about the crap the working class must take, it’s not clear, and Stephen McHattie’s televised cameos as a seedy mayor feels superfluous—more a fun acting choice than larger point. When Septic Man begins to accept his fate as something transformed, shouting cult-ready proclamations, it all feels unearned.” Samuel Zimmerman, Fangoria

septic-man-3

“Even at a mere 82 minutes it felt padded (complete with unexplained precognitive dream scenes), and (spoiler) the script doesn’t even go through with the full on tragic ending, opting for something that seems to be setting up a sequel (or positioning itself as a stealth prequel to The Toxic Avenger) instead. On the plus side, Jack’s makeup is terrific; he’s completely covered in a mostly practical design aided by some minor CGI flourishes, with a few stages of deterioration like any good monster movie of this sort (The Fly being the benchmark). “Three Desperate Killers. Two Terrified Captives. One Wrong Turn. No Chance In Hell’

Devil’s Mile is a 2014 American/Canadian horror film written and directed by Joseph O’Brien. It stars David Hayter, Maria del Mar, Casey Hudecki, Amanda Joy Lim, Frank Moore, Adrienne Kress, Samantha Wan, Shara Kim, Craig Porritt.

Devil's Mile

The film premiered at the Fantasia Film Festival on July 26, 2014 and is scheduled for release on DVD and VOD on August 12, 2014.

Plot teaser:

A trio of kidnappers take an ill-advised detour en route to deliver their hostages — two teenage girls — to their mysterious and powerful employer. When they accidentally kill one of the girls during a botched escape attempt, their simmering mistrust explodes into shocking violence. But what they thought was their worst case scenario is only the beginning when their deceased hostage returns from the dead as a terrifying, rage-filled demon, resurrected by the hellish forces that haunt the road — a road they realize they cannot get off of. Now captors and captive have to fight together to escape the monstrous creature pursuing them and somehow survive…

Reviews:

“The acting was convincing and consistent, and the cast meshed together very well in their respective roles; each portrayal, despite seeming somewhat cookie-cutter in the first few minutes, had subtle touches that instilled beliefs and perceptions about the characters without dialogue-heavy exposition.” Andrew Thompson, Legless Corpse

Devil's Mile 2

“While some of the film felt a little rushed and a bit rough around the edges, for a first movie done on a budget, I was most impressed by what O’Brien and his team have achieved. Additionally, I found the performances good and I really enjoyed the complicated story with all its twists and turns. All I expect from any film is to be kept entertained for its duration, and Devil’s Mile managed to do just that.” Nav Qateel, Influx Magazine

Plot Teaser

While investigating the death, a detective in the city of Montreal enters the world of prostitution, drug addiction, conspiracy, and the occult. As the investigation continues, it is revealed that the dead woman is Elizabeth Lucy, a prostitute and heroin addict. Suspects in Elizabeth’s death are soon murdered one by one, and evidence of occult ritual begins to surface, leading to a confrontation with a cult leader who may be possessed by Satan himself.

Reviews

“A unique and chilling ’70s obscurity, The Pyx is a terrific little film that well deserves rediscovery. Complex and disturbing, it’s not your typical fright film. Don’t let the less-than-outstanding tech scare you off, this one is definitely worth seeking out.” DVD Verdict

“Though the direction is well handled and at times very atmospheric, this production is not without its fare share of flaws, with its pacing being its most glaring shortcoming. There are far too many moments that tend to drag and this prevents any momentum that does occur, from sustaining.” 10K Bullets

pyx 5

“A slow, complicated thriller with an intelligent storyline – and some intriguing insights into Catholic guilt – The Pyx is structured like a film noir (a main character is found dead at the onset with the action constantly shifting back and forth in time). Not for all tastes, but for the right fans, this is a wonderful mystery that’s well worth finding.” The Terror Trap

“As crass as it is crazy, Father’s Day certainly isn’t a film for all tastes but it is one that shows some seriously impressive creativity and ambition. More than just a throwback to seventies drive-in pictures it’s a trip to the lunatic fringe and a ridiculously entertaining one at that.” Ian Jane, Rock! Shock! Pop!

Father’s Day is exquisitely grotesque creation that is occasionally too bonkers for its own good, however Astron-6 and Troma have still created a better grindhouse homage than Rodriguez or Tarantino ever could. It’s gleefully gory and sickening, whilst at the same time adept at taking the piss out of the genre it so clearly loves.” Digital Retribution

Father’s Day will not be for everyone. Those who are easily grossed out or offended (hell, even those of hardened sensibilities will find themselves cringing) will most likely avoid it. Evil Feed is a 2013 Canadian action horror comedy film directed by actor/stuntman Kimani Ray Smith from a screenplay co-written with Aaron Au and Jana Mitsoula, based on a story by Ryan Nicholson. It stars Laci J Mailey, Terry Chen, Alain Chanoine, Alyson Bath, Derek Gilroy, Bishop Brigante, Curtis Lum, Sebastian Gacki, David Milchard, Carrie Genzel, Johnson Phan.

Plot teaser:

Steven spent his entire life being the good son, dedicated all his time to the family business, The Long Pig Restaurant, known in the underground world for cannibalistic cuisine. When Steven hears that his father would rather sell the business to a stranger than pass it down to his own son, Steven has no choice but to chop off his head. With his father’s head safely displayed in a cabinet, Steven and his nymphomaniac girlfriend have big plans for The Long Pig. They capture elite MMA fighters and force them to battle in the restaurant’s new “Pit of Gore” where blood thirsty customers get to watch their meals being tenderized. Steven calls this, “Tendertainment!”

Meanwhile, Jenna returns to her father’s karate dojo and discovers him missing. Calling on the help of his students, they set out to find their Sensei, kicking ass and taking names. Their quest takes a turn for the worst when Jenna is kidnapped by the Triads. She awakes in a holding cell at The Long Pig Restaurant only to discover what Steven serves for dinner…

Reviews:

“This film could easily be the by-product of a focus group of stoned teenaged male horror fans, such is its pungent mixture of martial arts, gleefully over-the-top gore and titillation. To once again labour the food comparison, this is the perfect Friday night takeaway movie. Undemanding, a touch predictable, but entertainingly so. All in all there’s not much not to like about Evil Feed if you have a craving for something more substantial to accompany that post-pub kebab.” Matt Harries, Brutal as Hell

evil-feed

“It’s not an idea without potential – though perhaps not as a comedy, and certainly not the sort of comedy where the height of wit is in naming a character Phat Phuk. In any case, whatever hope you may have had from reading a synopsis is abandoned in the first five minutes, when we’re already getting bogged down in terrible dialogue, racial stereotyping, desperately ‘cool’ set ups (this is the sort of film that introduces characters in slow-mo, as if that wasn’t an idea done to death) and poor visual set ups – however much this cost to make, not a lot went on lighting.

Evil FeedAs it goes on, we jump from the restaurant to the antics of the martial artists, while the viewer tries to decide if everyone involved is supposed to be a complete loathsome dick or if that is just a problem with the writing – the latter I assume, but you never know. There’s gore a-plenty, all delivered excessively but without having any impact, and sex scenes that are too clumsily handled to be at all sexy.” David Flint, Strange Things Are Happening

“The action is good, but there could have been more of it. The filmmakers had great martial arts talent, but seemed more interested in gore than great action. It would also have been nice if there was a single female character who wasn’t either entirely helpless or naked most of the time.” Trista Devries, Toronto Film Scene

Territories isn’t as violent as you might expect, and it even manages to throw in some unsettlingly cruel humour, but it is a deeply upsetting experience that transcends simple ‘torture porn’ pigeonholing as well as predictable politicized posturing. A difficult watch but a worthwhile one.” Eye For Film

“Horror fans will delight in a handful of impressive gore scenes by make-up artist C.J. Goldman (Orphan), captured with handheld verve by cinematographer Karim Hussain (Hobo with a Shotgun). But Territories is ultimately less about the bloodletting than about revealing torture (and torture porn) to be a by-product of Bush-era extremism – an idea that seems worn out following Hostel and its many rehashes.” Hollywood Reporter

“The film is beautifully shot and the acting is fantastic all around. A creepy tension slowly builds and once it has taken hold it doesn’t let go. Reviews:

“Anyone who is a fan of Christian Mythological horror (movies like Fallen, Stigmata and their ilk), or anyone who is just tickled by the idea of a zombie movie with Christians in place of the living dead, owes it to themselves to write this in pen on their schedule. It is one of the few films I will have already seen that I will be watching again at the fest just so I can see it on the big screen with an audience. A truly inspired original effort that comes Highly Recommended.”C. Robert Cargill, Ain’t It Cool News

endoftheline

“why has Maurice Devereauxs hair-raising subterranean shocker taken so long to surface from the festival circuit? Maybe it’s because this sick satiric tale—in which religious zealots conduct their own Rapture with cross-shaped daggers on a stalled subway—pushes sensitive buttons about fundamentalist hysteria. Then again, maybe it’s because the movie raises the even more subversive possibility that the zealots are right. Either way, this is scary as hell and impressively unrelenting.” Jim Ridley, The Village Voice

Likewise the ending. The technicals are terrific, and the camerawork pushes the intensity meter while the cast do everything demanded of them with utter conviction. Reviews:

“As most ghost stories do, Haunter winds up becoming a murder mystery as well, and its creators carry off the combination smoothly and pay off both sets of expectations satisfyingly. There are a few good jolts along the way, though for the most part, Haunter aims and succeeds at keeping you caught up in its atmosphere and guessing, along with poor Lisa, about what will happen next and why.” Fangoria

“Vincenzo Natali’s films are always a pleasant surprise. The director tends to bring an enormous amount of depth and subtle visual pageantry to his films that we can easily acknowledge. Haunter is carefully constructed by Natali for audiences to absorb in an engaged and thought-provoking fashion.” Canadian Film Review

HAUNTER-003

“Haunter is one of those films that I want to love. Its cast is great, its premise is solid, and its execution sturdy, but the result is less than the sum of its parts rather than greater than them. That’s not a terrible criticism, so fans of Breslin or McHattie will certainly want to check this film out, as will fans of Natali’s other films. Haunted house fans will especially find something to love in the slightly offbeat take on the genre.” DVD Verdict

Tucker and Dale vs Evil - promoted as Tucker & Dale vs. Evil – is a 2010 Canadian comedy horror film directed by Eli Craig from a screenplay he co-wrote with Morgan Jurgenson. The film stars Alan Tudyk, Tyler Labine and Katrina Bowden.

Tucker and Dale vs Evil 2 is reportedly in development…

Plot teaser:

A group of “college kids” are going camping in the Appalachian mountains. While at a gas station, they encounter Tucker and Dale, two well-meaning hillbillies who have just bought the vacation home of their dreams: a run-down lakefront cabin, deep in the woods. On Tucker’s advice, Dale tries to talk to Allison, but because of his inferiority complex and appearance, he only scares her and her friends.

Tucker and Dale fishing

Tucker and Dale arrive at their decrepit cabin and begin repairing it. Nearby in the woods, Chad tells a story about the “Memorial Day Massacre”, a hillbilly attack which took place 20 years ago. The college kids go skinny-dipping where Tucker and Dale are fishing, and Allison, startled, hits her head. Tucker and Dale save her, but her friends think she was kidnapped.

tucker_and_dale_vs_evil

When Allison wakes up in Tucker and Dale’s cabin the next day, she is initially scared but befriends the two hillbillies. The other college kids arrive at the cabin to save Allison from her “psychopathic captors”, and Chuck runs away to get the police. While Dale and Allison are inside the cabin, Tucker angers some bees and frantically waves around his chainsaw, which the college kids misinterpret as hostility. They scatter through the woods, and Mitch accidentally impales himself on a broken tree. After finding Mitch’s body, Chad persuades the others that they are in a battle for survival…

Reviews:

Despite a deeply uninspiring title this is a mocking inverse-expectations comedy horror that succeeds where many others haven’t so ignoring complaints from some mainstream critics that it’s a one-joke movie, horror fans are definitely enjoying that slapstick splatter jokiness and at 84 minutes it doesn’t grind it’s point into the ground. Supposed backwoods folks with a knowledge of the allergic effects of camomille tea may be stretching the teasing humour, yet it works. The romantic element is more difficult to swallow than certain specialist teas but its the film’s one weakness. Visually engaging and with a strident score by Michael Shields and Andrew Kaiser, this refreshingly likeable film has found a perceptive audience via the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime where it seems perennially popular in the audience horror picks.

Adrian J Smith, Horrorpedia

“What keeps this so amiable is that it honors the simple pleasures of bloody horror without really vilifying anyone: screenwriters Morgan Jurgenson and Eli Craig devise most of the grisly deaths as elaborate slapstick mishaps. Aside from the good cheer, however, there isn’t much to distinguish this from the low-rent slasher movies it parodies; if you’re not a fan of the genre, you’ll likely find this pretty thin.” Ben Sachs, Chicago Reader

767635-110730-tucker-amp-dale

First time director Eli Craig gets that troublesome mix of horror and comedy dead right, aided in no small part by having charming leads and a central joke that’s original, smart and, above all, funny … As with most single-joke movies the plot runs out of steam, but it’s still a fun and memorable ride.” Phelim O’Neill, The Guardian

“At its heart, it’s really just a one-idea premise stretched out to feature length, but the lovable duo of Tudyk and Labine and an endearing layer of sweetness under all the blood make it a fully enjoyable comedy of (t)errors.” Keith Staskiewicz, Entertainment Weekly

hero_EB20111005REVIEWS111009990AR

Tucker & Dale vs. Evil is an immensely likable horror-comedy and easy to recommend, but also full of missed opportunities. While movie has terrific performances and is certainly filled with more than its fair share of gore and mayhem, its repetitive nature does detract from the overall experience.” Cinema Blend
